Episode: 9 and 10 / April 19, 2022
The Story of Olive Garden the Pig

In this episode of The Pet Pig Podcast we discuss The Story of Olive Garden the Pig with Anne. Anne lives in Long Beach, CA and is a radio DJ for a 90’s show on 99.1 KLBP. She is a vegetarian and has been a passionate animal welfare advocate for many years. She also has a podcast named, “Off With Her Head History Podcast”.  She has a mental disability that she deals with daily. She had an emotional support dog, Sophie,  but she passed away after 11 years. She inherited Olive Garden, her pig, while Sophie was still alive but when her dog passed away Olive took over that role without her even planning on her doing that. She watched Olive rise to the task amazingly. Olive now serves as a support companion to Anne daily, and helps her deal with everything that comes at her on days that she is struggling. She has a senior dog Inga, 2 chickens and Olive Garden the pig. Inga, her 3lb senior dog,  is the head of the pack in her home and everyone is totally fine with that. The dynamic of her home works very well for everyone.

In this episode Anne explains:

  • Her personal health challenges and what daily life is like for her.
  • She tells us why she wanted a pet pig.
  • She tells her experience of bringing Olive home and how Olive fits into her home with her other animals.
  • She tells us the story of how Olive saved her chickens’ lives and how that affected her and Olive.
  • She explains what her biggest challenges have been.
  • She tells us about resources that are available for families that are facing issues to learn how to defend themselves or get help.
  • She gives us her advice for someone who is looking to get a pet pig.

Part 2

  • She explains her routine and how she adapted to her life with a pet pig being a single woman.
  • Making sure you have researched and understand all the laws you will have to comply with before getting a pet pig.
  • She explains the importance of knowing your rights and having support so you can fight for your pig if you need to.
  • She explains how she was able to fight a notice she received that pigs were no longer allowed in her district.

Key Takeaway:

Do as much research as you can because you can never research enough. Make sure you start by looking up city ordinances and zoning laws in your district. Make sure you have a community to have support from others that own a pig also.
