Why are so many Pigs Rehomed?

In this Episode of The Pet Pig Podcast Autumn discusses the reasons why so many pigs are rehomed. The number of pigs that were rehomed within their first year is pretty high. I looked through my own records and about 10% were returned to me. Why are 10% returned? I tried to thoroughly prepare each of those homes to be successful with their pig and I still had 10% returned. What about other breeders and rescues that don’t put as much individual effort into their families? Why are pigs rehomed? What makes them such difficult pets that people feel the need to give them up?

  • The teacup pig myth
  • Aggression and bossy behavior
  • Destructive behavior
  • Circumstances change

A pig is a big commitment so make sure you are educated before you bring a pig home.

Key takeaway: A pet pig is a commitment. They can live 15-20 years if they are healthy and cared for properly. You have to do research so you are prepared.
