How Do I Prepare for Boarding My Pet Pig?

The vacation is booked!  Yay!!!  As the day gets closer you seem to feel more nervous about leaving your beloved pet pig.  What can you do to prepare for boarding your pet pig?  Let’s break it down so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

Boarding Options

When it comes to your options, it depends on what is available in your area.  The following are reliable places to board your pig.

  1. Autumn Acres Mini Pet Pigs (Us) – I offer boarding to pet pig owners.  I require a pig to be harness and leash trained since I will have to move them in and out of my home or boarding facility daily.  A harness and leash allow me to keep control.
  2. Ross Mill Farms in Jamison, PA.  These are highly experienced pig owners.  Check their website for availability.
  3. Pig Rescues.  Some rescues or sanctuaries offer boarding.
  4. Other pig owners in your area.  In my Educational Membership Group, there have been several families that willingly board or check on other’s pigs.  (Find out more HERE.)
  5. Some dog boarding facilities will board pigs.  Visit and make sure your pig will never come in contact with a dog while there.

Whoever you decide to leave your pig with, make sure they are going to follow your instructions.  They will need your phone number, the vet’s phone number, emergency vet clinic number and pet poison control number so they can be prepared for any situation.

What Should I Take for My Pet Pig?

It is important to take anything your pig would need to keep them happy and healthy.  For instance:

  • Bed and blankets
  • Food and bowl
  • Any supplements or medications they take.
  • Litter box, if they use one.
  • Favorite toys
  • Harness and leash
  • Treats or Whimzees
  • A shirt or blanket that smells like you may give them some added comfort.
  • Written food instructions, your phone number, vet’s number
  • Anything else that will allow your pig to feel comfortable.

Boarding at Autumn Acres

Boarding with us is an added bonus for any pet pig families that live within driving distance to Minerva, Ohio.  I have a small building with two areas that allow me to board a couple of pigs at a time.  The building is new but will be an extension of our home once it is finished.  It is comfortable and safe.  Cameras will be set up so your pig can be checked on at all hours of the day or night.

All pigs that are able to be on a harness and leash are moved outside on nice days to an area all of their own.  They are then moved inside after dinner.  If the weather is nasty, they are taken outside for their meals and potty and immediately brought back inside.  We repeat this for dinner.

These pigs are treated like family.  We love all our pigs and expect others to treat them kindly and with respect.  In turn, we do this to all pigs that we board.

Preparation is Key!

I can relate to the feeling of panic when we think about leaving our beloved pet pigs.  The key to calm is to find someone who knows and loves pigs.  Someone who you are confident will care for your pig as you do.
